Day 4 - 21st November 2006

It was the first bright sunny morning in Hobart. Mt Wellington had descended from the clouds and the phallic object on top was in plain view. Not contented with the finer weather we headed north in search of some more mist. Not really, we headed off to Frecynet National Park – Home of the 600 Steps which we'd heard so much about.

Along the way we stopped for sunglasses and nasal spray in Sorrell and then a little later came across the Spiky Bridge. It was a convict built bridge over a small gully with spikes protruding out of the top of the sides of the bridge. Apparently the spikes were likely just a whim of the overseer of construction. We saw a lot of sheep on the way, and stopped at a few towns and took a few photographs of older buildings.

After what seemed like an eternity we arrived at the national park. We headed first for a lookout and arrived to a scene that could have been lifted from a Doctor Who episode. The whole area was draped in a fairly think fog. At the lookout, which would have ordinarily have a good view, you could barely see the water 20 metres below. In my minds eye, I could see the boardwalk giving way and the doctor who “scream” and the credits rolling. Only to see that next episode we jumped to safety and the boardwalk (of a model thereof) tumbling into the sea in a way that only low-budget sci-fi can. We came to a lighthouse and had lunch and then headed off to the 600 steps.

Unfortunately, when we arrived at the carpark Campbell suffered a fall getting out of the car, damaging his knee, elbow and forehead and lost all enthusiam for climbing. He was given a great host of lollies from passing tourists while Mum, Dad, Mark and Harrison went for a short walk leaving Chris with the patient. After about 5 minutes walking, Mum and Dad decided it was too hard, gave up and headed back to the car. Campbell had just about calmed down so we left.

We stopped at Coles Bay for ice creams which is Australias first plastic bag free town.
Then it was another long drive home, visiting Campbell's town aka Campbelltown.

At night we engaged in a game of bingo and, surprise, surpise won nothing.
